American Red Cross North Texas Region Responds To Hurricane Isaac

DISASTER UPDATE: Hurricane Isaac

Situation Update

The American Red Cross has launched a large disaster response that could last for weeks across multiple states along the Gulf of Mexico as Hurricane Isaac affects millions of lives with strong winds, heavy rain, flooding and coastal surges. Hurricane Isaac was upgraded from a tropical storm as of approximately 12 PM ET and was about 55 miles SSE of the mouth of the Mississippi River as of 2 PM ET. A hurricane warning is in effect from east of Morgan City, LA to the Louisiana-Mississippi border. A tropical storm warning is in effect from the Mississippi-Alabama border to Destin, FL, and from Morgan City, LA to Cameron, LA as of 5 PM August 28.

Key Impacts:

-In Louisiana, mandatory evacuation has been ordered in 2 parishes, while voluntary evacuation has been order for 4 additional parishes.

-As of 2 PM ET 8/28, the center of Hurricane Isaac was located about 55 miles SSE of the mouth of the Mississippi River. Maximum sustained winds are near 70 mph, with gusts reaching 85 mph.

-Hurricane conditions are expected in the Hurricane Warning area along the northern Gulf of Mexico on Tuesday.

-Storm surges of 6 to 12 feet are expected in Mississippi and Southeastern Louisiana, 4 to 8 feet in Alabama, 3 to 6 feet in South-Central Louisiana, and the Florida panhandle.

-Hurricane Isaac is expected to produce total rainfall amounts of 7 to 14 inches, up to 20 inches in some areas, which could result in significant lowland flooding.

-Tornadoes may occur along the northern Gulf Coast on Tuesday.

In Texas, the Red Cross has:

Provided staff and leadership to the Texas State Disaster Operations Center, which opened Tuesday morning.

• Placed more than 20 shelters on standby in East and Southeast Texas, identified additional Red Cross volunteers to support sheltering activities, and activated more than 40 Emergency Response Vehicles, plus 1 Emergency Communications Response Vehicle.

• Transported bulk distribution items like water, clean-up supplies and insect repellent into the state.

• Distributed Hurricane Preparedness sheets and asked people to download the Red Cross Hurricane Mobile Application.

• Identified local vendors to support feeding operations.

• Prepared their mental health and health services workers to be mobilized throughout the state to support the affected communities after the disaster.

•  Conduct a Percentage of Sales Program - Showcase your commitment to the Red Cross and the people we serve while generating sales for your company by donating a percentage of your sales to Disaster Relief.

• Donate Ad Space- Donate a portion of your advertising inventory and help share our stories about the individuals, families and communities affected by disaster.

• Place a Red Cross Banner Ad on Your Website - Place a Red Cross banner ad on your company website to reinforce your support of the Red Cross and encourage donations through our Donate Now webpage.

• Text "REDCROSS" to 90999 to Make a Donation – Customers of participating wireless carriers can make a $10 donation to support Disaster Relief by texting “REDCROSS” to 90999.
