PRLog - Aug. 30, 2012 - NEW YORK -- The indie feature comedy We Are the Hartmans, known for its innovative film release in New York City during the height of Occupy Wall Street was honored with four major awards at the 2012 World Music and Independent Film Festival, (WMIFF) in Washington DC, August 25.
Richard Chamberlain stars in We Are the Hartmans
Nominated in a record nine categories, Hartmans won for Best Comedy, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor and Best Woman Filmmaker. The film tells the story of a town's comic battle to save its soul by saving its last local hangout, a soon-to-be-foreclosed rock club called Hartmans.
An international jury awarded Best Actor to Ben Curtis of "Dell Dude" fame, while Best Supporting Actor honors went to stage and screen legend Richard Chamberlain. Director Laura Newman is the first to be awarded in the festival's new category of Women Filmmakers. Hartmans is her debut feature film.
The WMIFF was founded by director/producer June Daguiso in 2010 to create a global film community and bring exposure to emerging film talents from around the world. WMIFF is an IMDb qualifying international film festival.
Hartmans, which features a soundtrack of notable indie music artists, premiered through an innovative rock club tour of New York City in the fall of 2011 just as the Occupy Wall Street campaign was gaining momentum. Media were quick to connect the comedy parable to the real life movement and its grassroots rejection of a corporate-controlled world. Huffington Post called it “a joy ride from start to finish...with topics that the 99% can relate to”. Additional coverage came from The New York Times, The Hollywood Reporter and Gothamist.
Hartmans also stars WMIFF nominees Jennifer Restivo, Joy Suprano and Jonah Spear. The script, penned by Newman and Emmy-award winner Peter J. Brash, was nominated for Best Screenplay. Alec Puro was nominated for Best Original Sound. Music from Freelance Whales, Iron and Wine and Black Taxi highlight the film's soundtrack. The film was also an official selection at the Atlanta Film Festival and New York's CMJ Music Marathon and Film Festival.
Netflix subscribers can add Hartmans to their queue in advance of the film's October 1 release. http://movies.netflix.com/
