By: Bio-IT World The Pre-Conference Short Courses consist of: An Introduction to RDMA Technology (September 10) http://www.Bio- RDMA (Remote Data Memory Access) is an advanced networking technology for improving application performance and efficiency by allowing data transfers from virtual memory on one node directly to virtual memory on another node while bypassing the kernel. Using RDMA eliminates most network overhead, eliminates memory copies in the node and provides true parallelism between the user’s program and network transfers. This results in extremely low end-to-end latency, high network throughput and large reductions in CPU utilization, yielding very high application performance, exceptional scalability and significant reductions in overall system cost. RDMA is a dominant network technology in high performance computing and is now being adopted in environments such as clouds where latency, performance and scalability are important. The OpenFabrics Alliance (OFA) provides, under open source, a “verbs” interface that gives the user or the kernel complete and simple access to this advanced network technology. The first half of the short course provides an introduction to RDMA including insights into how this technology is applied in modern data centers. The second half will address RDMA from a software perspective including an overview of the APIs used by application programmers to access an RDMA network. An Overview of OpenFlow and SDN with Real-World Cases (September 10) http://www.Bio- Increasing efficiency & scalability is top of mind for IT leaders today but in many cases dependencies on the network limit the extent and speed at which cloud implementations can be deployed. Today’s networks lack automation and programmability which prevents cloud solutions from being dynamically delivered to users with minimum increase in operational complexity. Thanks to the Open Networking Foundation (ONF) standardization efforts, Software-Defined Networking (SDN) can now bring a programmability comparable to the compute and storage industries to the network for more agility, flexibility, scalability, security, and more by looking at the network in a new way, yielding better synergies with applications running on it. In this tutorial we will describe the technology, the architectural implications, the benefits, and the prominent use cases in which it is already being applied.
