The firm’s story began when Bud Stack had an interview with Robert King High, a former Miami mayor who later became a gubernatorial candidate. “When I joined him in 1962 we named the law firm High and Stack. I had been out of law school two years and I wanted to get into the plaintiff’s field, because I have a lot of compassion for people injured as a result of others’ negligence,”
The firm continued to grow; however, Bob High died suddenly at the age of 43, due to a heart attack that changed everything. “He was our senior partner. I was only 31 years old and I took on the mantle of senior partner; at that point we had seven or eight lawyers,” he said. The firm briefly opened an office in Ft. Pierce, while having lawyers commute to Melbourne, he recalled. “We actually purchased a second-hand Lincoln limousine and were able to set it up with all the office equipment we needed in the back seat. Consequently we could ride up here and do all of our research and make phone calls, dictate, or do whatever work we wanted in the car,” Bud said. Ultimately, the firm became too busy to keep commuting in the Lincoln, so in 1986, Bud set up an office for the High Stack firm in Melbourne. It turned out to be a wise move. When asked how the firm continued to prosper in Melbourne Bud explained, “We came up to Melbourne and really worked hard. We’ve maintained our reputation and client base over the years because the firm truly cares about its clients. Personally, I really enjoy helping people from my hometown. More than half of our new clients are those who were referred to us by a former client or former client’s family. That’s the best advertising you can have-happy clients.”
Over the next several decades the High Stack firm continued to grow and prosper in Melbourne with partners David Gordon and Michael Kirby joining the firm. Now semi-retired, Bud is very proud of the successful law firm he has built over the past 50 years and explained that although he has worked in Tampa and Miami before coming back home to work in Melbourne, his heart never really left. “Melbourne is really Florida’s best kept secret.
