Born from the desire of sisters Abigail and Lisa Slater to draw attention to female chefs who are the unsung heroes of the Canadian culinary scene, coupled with their wish to raise funds to support women living with breast cancer, Eat to the Beat is a unique food experience that helps ensure that no one needs to face breast cancer alone. It’s an evening that should not be missed!”
Eat to the Beat has a cornucopia of sweet and savory foods, wines, premium beers and spirits for sampling at food and drink stations positioned around Roy Thomson Hall’s outer lobby. The incredible chef line-up includes Donna Dooher (Mildred’s Temple Kitchen), Anne Yarymowich (Art Gallery of Ontario), Vanessa Yeung (Aphrodite Cooks), Arvinda and Preena Chauhan (Arvinda's Healthy Gourmet Indian Cooking), Joanne Lusted (Clean Eating Magazine), Dufflet Rosenberg (Dufflet Pastries), Madelaine Sperry (Flaky Tart ), Lynn Jones-Adams (Inn on the Twenty), Wanda Beaver (Wanda's Pie in the Sky), Lola Csullog-Fernandez (Pimentón Spanish and Mediterranean Fine Foods), Alida Solomon (Tutti Matti), Adrienne Weinberg (She Takes the Cake) and Top Chef Canada II finalists Trish Sheen (Crush Wine Bar) and Elizabeth Rivasplata (Art Gallery of Ontario) to name a few.
They’re fun, they’re colourful, they’re cheeky and they’ve become a tradition at Eat to the Beat. Adding class with a bit of sass, breast cancer survivors will be modeling original food-inspired corsets that they have created.
The evening also includes live music, a silent auction featuring must-have items, and a raffle draw for a chance to win great prizes.
“I have been participating in Eat to the Beat since its inception,” adds Donna Dooher, Eat to the Beat spokesperson, chef and owner of Mildred’s Temple Kitchen. "When my younger sister was diagnosed with breast cancer she embarked on a journey of surgical procedures, chemotherapy and radiation but through the support of her family and community she was able to gain a foothold on a positive attitude which was paramount to her healing. 15 years along the road she and I still discuss how important organizations like Willow are to helping women who are winning the battle against cancer."
Highlighted as one of Toronto’s top 10 events by BizBash magazine, Eat to the Beat has raised more than $3.2 million for Willow.
“We are very proud that over 80% of the proceeds from Eat to the Beat comes straight back to Willow Breast Cancer Support Canada,” states Jeffrey Beach, Executive Director of Willow Breast Cancer Support Canada. “People supporting the event should know that their contribution has a direct and positive impact on individuals affected by breast cancer. They are helping to fund fund initiatives such as our toll-free helpline, training women so they can run support groups in their communities and developing innovative ways to provide support online so the people who need it have greater access that is not limited by office hours, time zones, cultural barriers or remote geographic locations.”
Over 22,700 women are diagnosed with breast cancer in Canada every year. From the individual diagnosed, to their family, friends and caregivers, Willow provides free support and information today for those who cannot wait for tomorrow’s cure.
