Aug. 28, 2012 - PRLog -- Son of the Sea, Inc. announces the painting of an outdoor mural on the side of Lulu’s Café sixty foot wall facing Ocean Blvd in downtown Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

What do you do with 404 cans of spray paint and an airbrush machine?  Ask Misty Coan, owner of Lulu’s Café, who commissioned popular surf lifestyle artist and Myrtle Beach native Drew Brophy to paint the mural, titled “A day at the beach.”

The mural rendering depicts the allure that draws residents and tourists to Myrtle Beach; beach umbrellas, children building sand castles, a surfer in the waves and a banner plane flying above.

The painting will be bright, colorful and energetic, typical of Brophy’s distinctive art style.

Coan explains how the mural came about; “I wanted to liven up the street and add color to our cool building.  I mentioned to Mary Claire Brophy, a Lulu’s hostess, that I wanted a mural on the outside of Lulu’s.  She said her Uncle Drew was an artist and that he would be in town this summer.   I was already a huge fan, and well, it all came together like it was meant to be!”

Three generations of the Brophy family will team up to paint the mural.  With help from Brophy’s father, longtime Myrtle Beach resident Tom Brophy, and Brophy’s eleven year old son Dylan, Brophy expects that the mural will take one to two weeks to complete, depending upon weather.

A Myrtle Beach resident until 1993, Brophy left to travel the world in search of good surf.  He eventually settled in San Clemente, California and became known as one of the most successful surf artists in history, but he never forgot his South Carolina roots.

Having grown up in the Dunes Club area, Brophy has many fond memories of swimming in the swash as a little boy and surfing all over Myrtle Beach as a teenager; memories which contributed to the artwork concept.

Brophy says of the area, “My happiest childhood memories are of spending all day at the beach.  And that, I feel, is the essence of Myrtle Beach.”

The mural will be painted using a unique medium combination of spray paint and airbrush.  Brophy will begin applying paint to the wall on Friday, August 31st, which is the expected delivery date of over 440 pounds of spray paint.

“I envision this mural becoming an iconic, must-see spot for tourists visiting Myrtle Beach, because it captures the joy of why they came.”  Coan says of the mural.  “People from all over the globe will want their photo taken with it!”
