The first installation of the new G20CM34 generator sets will be located at Rubart Station in Grant County, Kan. These 20-cylinder, natural gas-fueled generator sets produce 10 MW of mechanical output and feature high availability, long life, low fuel and lube oil consumption, and low maintenance requirements. Designed for long-term reliable operations, the G20CM34 is equipped with the proven Cat electronic control system to ensure precise fuel delivery and world-class efficiency. Construction of the power plant is scheduled to begin in 2013.
“Our members will see multiple advantages when Rubart Station comes to fruition,” said Stuart Lowry, president and CEO of Mid-Kansas. “Along with enabling us to transition away from our aging generation fleet, this type of generation resource has a fast start capability, allowing for quick response to market conditions and our system’s growing integration of wind energy.”
“Mid-Kansas Electric is building this new station to help manage the fluctuations in available energy that are inherent with the growing presence of wind power in the area,” said Dean Powell, director of Global Sales and Marketing, Caterpillar Power Generation Systems. “We are truly excited that Mid-Kansas Electric will be the first to install our new G20CM34 generator sets. These generator sets will not only enhance Mid-Kansas’ current diverse generation portfolio comprised of natural gas, coal and wind but also serve as a reliable and cost-effective means to meet its members growing demand for energy.”
