Roof Grip versitility on Durban roof

A contract was recently awarded by the Ethikweni Municipality for renovations to the Durban City Hall. The outside plant room that had access via the roof area required the wooden walkways to be replaced as they were no longer safe for use. The access needed to be up to one roof area and then over a recently replaced roof area. The roof pitch was too steep for a standard Roof Grip product so Alifab modified their standard Roof Grip product in order to suit the application.

An aerial aluminium access walkway section was manufactured using a combination of the Amplibeam structural member as the stringer and Ampligrip expanded aluminium grating as the flooring, in order to get access to the pitched roof area. A ‘step ladder’ access was designed and manufactured, also using the Amplibeam ALB 200 as the stringer with Ampligrip treads to allowed access to the apex of the pitch roof. Along the apex of the roof another specially designed walkway, again using an Amplibeam ALB200 as a stringer, was manufactured to give the walkway enough height to allow for the walkway to clear span across the apex of the roof without damaging the ridge capping. The ALB 200 distributed the loads imposed by the walkway perfectly across the roof sheets to ensure no damage is caused to the roof sheets or the roof structure.

This achieved a cost efficient solution that satisfied the client’s needs and has lead to the easy and safe access for the maintenance and cleaning of the plant in the plant room.

All the walkways sections required handrails because of the pitch of the roof and the subsequent height of the walkways. Alifab used its standard aluminium handrail system in the project as it is simple and cost effective.
