Aug. 26, 2012 - PRLog -- Chapel Hill, N.C.—The Family Advocacy Network (FAN), a program of Mental Health America of the Triangle, will present “Stewards of Children: Confronting Child Sexual Abuse with Courage,” on Saturday, September 8, from 9 a.m. to noon at Freedom House Recovery Center, 102 New Stateside Drive in Chapel Hill. Amy Martin-Jewett, RN, will facilitate.

The workshop is offered free of charge. Training materials and refreshments will be provided. Registration is limited to 25 people, and will close when the limit is reached or on Thursday, September 6, whichever comes first. For more information or to register, contact Georgia Gamcsik at Georgia@mhatriangle.org or 919.942.8083.

Designed to help parents and other interested members of the community learn more about child sexual abuse, the workshop will teach participants:
•How to prevent abuse
•How to recognize warning signs
•How to react responsibly when abuse occurs

“Recent headline news about the trial of Penn State coach Jerry Sandusky, who sexually victimized children entrusted to his care, has caused parents across the country to question the safety of their kids when in the care of others,” said Gamcsik, a family advocate with FAN. “And they should be concerned. Statistics reveal that 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys are sexually abused before their 18th birthday.”

Children with special needs have a higher rate of victimization than other children, Gamcsik noted.

“Stewards of Children” is an interactive sexual abuse prevention program developed by Darkness to Light, a nonprofit organization with the mission of reducing the incidence of child sexual abuse through public awareness and education. The Chapel Hill-Carrboro YMCA has partnered with FAN and other area organizations to make the trainings available throughout the community.
