Aug. 25, 2012 - PRLog -- In June 2012, Dr. Kanani successfully completed AAID’s PR MaxiCourses® on an innovative and cutting edge technique in implant dentistry. He is now amongst a handful of dental surgeons in Los Angeles that has the ability to perform a drill-less and flap-less dental implant surgery.
Dr. Kanani has been persistently looking for superior and extraordinary quality for his dental surgery practice. His dedication to perfecting the “Art Of Dentistry” (as he refers to it) and commitment to making a positive impact on his patient’s lives, has taken him all over the United States to learn new techniques and technologies in the field of dentistry.
He is an Associate Fellow for International Congress of Oral Implantologists, IADA and Woodland Hills Chamber of Commerce, and AAID (AAID is the only dental implant organization that is recognized in court decision). To be awarded The Associate Fellow certificate of AAID candidates must meet the professional and leadership credentials in addition to educational/experiential requirements and successfully pass a series of examination.
“Early on I realized that just being a good dentist wasn’t for me, I aspired to perfect my skills as a dental surgeon. I am blessed to be able to follow my passion and challenge myself each and every day.”-Dr. Kanani. (http://woodlandhillsdentalspa.com/)
Those that have been patients of Dr. Kanani, appreciate his uplifting spirit, flawless dentistry techniques, and the efforts he and his staff have put in creating a serene and spa-like environment. Nonetheless this was not what amazed his returning patients during the first week of June 2012. What was incredible was watching him hang yet another certificate in Implantology, and hearing him talk about his successful completion of a flap-less/drill-less implant surgery. This is a technique he has acquired after 10 months of extensive and hands-on implantology coursework at the “Advanced Dental Implant Institute”. (AAID)
The American Academy Of Implant Dentistry MaxiCourses®, provide comprehensive training programs on oral rehabilitation and implant dentistry in 300 or more hours of lecture, laboratory sessions, live surgical demonstrations and home/office assignments.
Having been on a waiting list for two years, he got into the course and graduated in June 2012 as the youngest Doctor in the course; he was also is the first to attempt and successfully complete a flap-less/drill-less dental implant surgery after this course.
"I'm doing procedures today that I never imagined being possible prior to completing AAID PR MaxiCourse®, and Tatum Surgical International Institute.” says Dr. Kanani as he explains the flap-less/drill-less dental implant technique he now utilizes.
How Is This Dental Implant Procedure Different? (http://woodlandhillsdentalspa.com/Dental-implants)
With the conventional dental implant procedure, if the patient’s jawbone is still in good condition and the patient has not suffered from bone loss, the procedure starts with flapping the gum off of the bone then drilling out a hole in the jawbone to insert the implants. The issue with drilling is that it removes parts of the inner bone leaving thin walls to surround and protect the implant. Whereas the drill-less procedure expands the bone, making thicker walls surrounding the implant, therefore creating better housing for the life of the implant.
A common problem with drilling for dental implant is that in most cases, patients have been missing their tooth for a long period of time and have moderate to severe cases of bone loss. In these cases, the patient needs to undergo a block bone graft surgery, where a block of bone is taken from the jaw (or other parts) and screwed to the jawbone to create a thicker and more stable platform for the implant to be placed and supported for many years to come.
Although in unique cases this procedure is the only possible implant treatment option, when a patient needs block bone graft, the success rate of the surgery decreases. Treating a patient with block bone graft is a less predictable surgery due to the need of laying a flap, which cuts the blood supply of the area for the duration of the surgery and increases the possibility of post-up complication such as higher chances of infection. Performing this surgery also requires 6 months of healing time to allow the transferred bone to bond and adhere to the jawbone, and get ready to undergo a drilling procedure. Aside from extending the duration of the whole treatment plan, it is also an added step, which can cost about $3,000. (http://woodlandhillsdentalspa.com/Dentist-in-Woodland-hills)
With efforts of organizations like AAID to improve the implant dentistry and educate dentists who are seeking excellence in implantology; dedicated doctors like Dr. Kanani now have the ability to perform Flap-less and Drill-less dental implant surgeries.
The flap-less/drill-less surgery is a more technique sensitive procedure, which eliminates the need to drill out some of the bone and/or having to perform a block bone graft in most cases. Although this procedure takes the Implantologist more than double the time to perform in compare to the conventional implant procedure, it cuts the dental implant cost and healing time in half for the patients. Dr. Kanani’s first flap-less/drill-less surgery was done on a patient who had been missing his pre-molar tooth for more than 20 years. As mentioned earlier about bone loss associated with tooth loss, over a period of time the jawbone under the missing teeth atrophies (diminution of the bone in the size of a cell and tissue) or is reabsorbed. This often leaves the jawbone with insufficient quantity and quality of bone suitable for supporting an implant. In this case, Dr. Kanani’s patient had suffered from severe bone loss and the jawbone associated with his missing pre-molar tooth had atrophied to about 1.3 millimeter in thickness. Dr. Kanani was able to give him a dental implant without having to perform a block bone graft or drilling, something that would have been the only option for this patient had he not visited Dr. Kanani.
