“You just need to know what to be watching for,” said Jim Hafner, owner of Eastern Roofing & Siding, which serves the Cottage Grove area. “If you’re vigilant in watching out for problems, you can probably avoid the need for a new roof until a time when the weather is more friendly.”
Hafner said the biggest repairs his companies make are due to four factors: leaks, bad installation, a lack of maintenance and “shrinkage,”
“Leaks are the easiest problem to spot. The other three are not probably as clear to homeowners, as they’re not as visible in the same way leaks are,” Hafner said. “Even if you have a nagging suspicion the roof might be reaching the end of its life, you should get in contact with a professional roofer to get another opinion.”
Hafner said homeowners shouldn’t expect their roofs to continue to stay in the same shape without the proper inspections and maintenance, comparing the situation to an automobile, from the assembly line phase to the regular maintenance needed.
