The Inside Story - The Pilot of Online Health Records

M Denis: I’m well, thanks, Helen.

IQPC Exchange: Great of you to join us. I understand that you’ve launched a personal on-line health record system for your patients. This was in May of this year. Could you possibly tell us a bit more about the project, what was involved, how long it took you to complete, the challenges you’ve encountered along the way, and also how you tackled those challenges?

M Denis: Yes indeed. Well, we’re very excited about this initiative, and I suppose the first thing to say is that we’re not treating this as an IT project, it really represents a significant service transformation. And we entitle it Empowerment, because really the key aim of what we’re trying to achieve through this is to empower our patients to be much better informed about their health condition, to much better understand the service pathways available to them. And excitingly, to start to move from what I describe as a passive recipient of service and of information to a far more active participant in their own health experience.

So the PHR, Personal Health Record, is a vehicle for supporting such a service transformation model that we’re trying to introduce. We started the journey along this path about three years ago, where we started to have conversations with our local services and with our patients about the potential for a different relationship between patients and clinical team and their care coordinator, to facilitate this more active role that the patient could enact.
