Portugal - GNR and Safe Communities Algarve Launch "My GNR"

Aug. 24, 2012 - PRLog -- GNR Comando Territorial De Faro and Safe Communities Algarve today announced the launch of “My GNR”, a project that has been under development for the last four months by the two organizations. “My GNR” is an online feature on the Safe Communities Algarve website, which is aimed at further enhancing police/community co-operation therefore helping keep the Algarve a safe place to live and visit.

The “My GNR” program which uses an interactive map is the first of its kind in Portugal and brings together six features divided into the main GNR geographical areas in the Algarve, which residents can easily access. These are:

   Details of the Programa Residência Segura (Safe Residence Program), how to join the program and contact details.

   “Eyes and Ears” – A features that encourages the public to report suspicious activities to the GNR, what to look out for, with a direct email reporting link to the GNR.

   Details of the area covered.

   Contact details of all GNR stations with an on line link showing the location map of each.

   An operations page showing details of recent GNR arrests in each area

   News and Downloads – Latest GNR news, events and downloads in each area.

David Thomas founder of Safe Communities Algarve said that “He was pleased to co-operate closely with the GNR in further enhancing their police community work such as the Programa Residência Segura and other community policing programs. “My GNR” reflects the concept of the police being part of society and engages public support in preventing crime”. He hoped therefore that the public would make good use of this, in particular the “Eyes and Ears” feature as it is important to report suspicious activities. He added that this was just the starting point and already there are plans to further develop “My GNR” in the future.

Territorial Commander for Faro, Coronel José Pimenta said “That this tool was of crucial importance to the approach of the GNR to the population in reducing criminality and maintaining a feeling of community security.”
