“Winning the PVIFF Best New Filmmaker Award is a major accomplishment for me,” said Coleman. “It shows that even though I am young, people in the film industry are taking my work as seriously as I am.”
During the Sunday evening event hosted by Comedian/Actor Rodney Perry and V-103 FM Radio Personality Ramona DeBreaux, Fox said she applauded the teen filmmaker’s efforts for making a film about teen dating violence.
“Keep up the good work young man,” Fox told Coleman. “I’ll be looking out for you and hope to hear more about your work in the future.”
PVIFF Producer Dora Din Durant said “this young man has a bright future in the film industry as a top director.” She said Coleman’s film is a great accomplishment.
Coleman, who wrote and directed Payin’ The Price, financed the film with his mom’s 401K and $10,000 prize from MTV’s America’s Best Dance Crew’s Champions For Charity episode. He shot the film in 11 days because he had to return to two-a-day football practices at Hackensack High School in New Jersey.
Hardwick, who plays Levi in Sparkle and was the Ambassador of the PVIFF, acknowledged Coleman from center stage.
“I want to give a shout out to the young filmmaker Jordan Coleman,” said Hardwick who was impressed that Coleman had completed a feature film. “Like Jordan, I played football too, but Jordan, I encourage you to come on over to the filmmaking side.”
After the awards ceremony, Hardwick took photos with Coleman and encouraged him to keep up the good and work. The actor told Coleman to “hit me up on Twitter” so they can keep in touch. Other celebrities at the ceremony included Naturi Naughton, Tommy Ford, Lisa Wu Hartwell, Marla Gibbs and Daryl “Chill” Mitchell.
“Hopefully, Vivica, Omari, Chill, Rodney and some of the other celebrities will remember me when I am casting my next film, said Coleman. “It would be an amazing experience for me for me to cast any one of them in my upcoming film.”
Coleman’s next film Just In Case, is about high school football, sexting and Hollywood. He is best known as the voice and actor of Tyrone the Moose on Nickelodeon’
His second film Payin’ The Price made its debut at the 2011 Martha’s Vineyard African-American Film Festival and won the HBO Best Feature Film Award. Earlier this year, Coleman received recognition from The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences at the Cleveland International Film Festival.
