Aug. 21, 2012 - PRLog -- The conference, which is scheduled for November 2 and 3 in Philadelphia, is entitled “Alternatives to Biological Psychiatry: Treatments That Work”.

“This is a conference for people who want to learn about and promote safe, humane and life-enhancing approaches to treating people who are diagnosed with mental disorders” said Al Galves, ISEPP Executive Director.  “It’s for mental health professionals, researchers, teachers, parents, family members and consumers who don’t like the idea of using psychotropic drugs and electroshock except in the direst of circumstances and who want to learn about safer and more effective approaches.”

One of the keynote speakers is James Gordon, a psychiatrist who uses a wide variety of non-drug approaches to help people who are diagnosed with mental disorders.
Dr. Gordon is the Founder and Director of the Center for Mind-Body Medicine in Washington, DC.  His most recent book is Unstuck: Your Guide to the Seven-Stage Journey Out of Depression of which a reviewer said: “Unstuck is the most exciting book on transforming depression I’ve ever read.  Before you reach for a drug, read this book to feel better.  This book is EXACTLY what this over-medicated country needs right now.”  One of his other books is Manifesto for a New Medicine: Your Guide to Healing Partnerships and the Wise Use of Alternative Therapies.  In that book, Dr. Gordon describes in depth and detail how he uses psychotherapy, meditation, touch, movement, breathing, nutrition and non-pharmaceutical medicines to help people.

Dr. Gordon was the first chairman of the National Institute for Health’s Program Advisory Council for the Office of Alternative Medicine.  In recent years, he has gone to terror-ridden places to deliver non-drug psychotherapy to trauma victims.
