Aug. 21, 2012 - PRLog -- 1.   Singapore, 22 August 2012- The Institute of Chemical and Engineering Sciences (ICES), an institute of the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR), in collaboration with the Singapore Workforce Development Agency (WDA), organised a seminar on “Advanced Analytical Characterisation Seminar for the Chemical Industry” to promote the education and dissemination of advanced characterisation techniques relevant to the chemicals and pharmaceuticals industry. The event was held today at Biopolis and graced by Dr. Raj Thampuran, Managing Director of A*STAR. More than 350 participants, particularly, QA/QC Specialists, Lab Managers, Researchers, Chemists and Engineers from industry participated at this event.

2.  Characterisation refers to the use of advanced scientific techniques to probe the structure and properties of materials which can take the form of physical testing or elemental analysis. Magnification and internal visualisation are normally carried out through a range of microscopic and elemental analysis techniques like x-ray spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. The seminar held today focused on a wide range of analytical characterisation techniques, along with an explanation of the underpinning fundamental principles, sample analysis and technical applications. Experts in these fields presented recent developments in advanced characterisation techniques and their practical applications. ‘

3.  To support the chemical and other related industries, ICES offers its physicochemical expertise in material characterisation and process consultancy, supported by a comprehensive suite of advanced characterisation equipment

4.   Dr Keith Carpenter, Executive Director, ICES commented: “As a leading research institute for the chemicals industry, ICES is keen to spearhead productivity improvement programmes for Singapore in collaboration with WDA. This seminar is one of such activities organised for our industry partners. We are pleased to offer our expertise and facilities to support the Singapore chemical industry in analytical characterisation.”

5.    As part of ICES' assistance to companies, specific and customised training and development programmes will be rolled out to nurture a pool of skilled professionals, such as process technicians, chemists, quality control engineers and specialists. The initiative will be in collaboration with WDA to develop Singapore Workforce Skills Qualifications (WSQ)-based courses coupled with improvement services for the process industries.  Training in quality management, material characterisation and advanced analytical equipment operation will be rolled out to raise operation excellence in the industry. Along with access to advanced characterisation facilities, ICES will provide practical and cost-effective technical support on process development

6.  Ms Julia Ng, Senior Director of the Manufacturing and Construction Division at WDA, said: "WDA is pleased to collaborate with ICES to boost the productivity of the industry through WSQ training. We believe that companies can leverage on ICES' expertise and state-of-the-art equipment to increase their productivity levels by the end of the programme. By participating in this programme, companies have the opportunity to upgrade the skills of their workers and at the same time, make use of ICES' world class facilities to undertake application-centric R&D activities."
