My works here are very site-specific. It's all about the place and the process. Being part of the environment for a point in time, creating ephemeral sensor based playgrounds but also working on many smaller conceptual works. The biggest impact on my body of work here might be the ever present (even though blurred) borders between human and nature. I try to have a very childish and naive view on things and to forget about every single detail I might already knew. It also means seeing Joshua trees as people. I fell in love.
RACHEL OSTROW – Painter
Rachel Ostrow's paintings use the relationship between abstraction and representation to be suggestive; to provoke thought and to engage the viewer's imagination. Her process is like an improvisational dance. It is activated by intuition and relies on chance. She combines the movement of mark-making with layers of activity and reduction to ultimately create form and space. The peacefulness of the desert and the vastness of the landscape have invigorated her paintings with a spirit of calm and openness.
