On Friday, Aug. 24, Woodland Park, Colorado will be a sprint location for one of the largest cycling events in United States history, the 2012 USA Pro Challenge. The race will feature the best of the best in professional cycling, competing on a challenging course for seven days through Colorado. The 2011 USA Pro Challenge attracted more than 1 million spectators from around the state, the country and the world, in addition to airing in 161 countries and territories internationally, and the Colorado economy was the beneficiary of $83.5 million in economic impact thanks to a successful first-year event. “We are thrilled that the race is coming through Woodland Park for the first time, not only because of the national and international exposure the city will receive but also because of the out-of-towners that could visit our community,” said Michael Perini, Co-chairman for the local organizing committee. “Businesses could potentially see increases in customer traffic and awareness,” Perini said. To take advantage of the race coming through here Woodland Park is planning a week long list of activities. “We have events planned during the week to build interest and excitement for the race,” said Perini. “A bike swap, watch parties, scavenger hunt and other events are currently in the works by the committee and local businesses,” For Friday, the local organizing committee is anticipating 2,000 or more people to watch the sprint. Also, school will be out for the day and there will be a farmers market downtown that morning.
