Community Celebrates Milestone, Reflects on Growth and Plans Future Changes

PRLog (Press Release) - Aug. 16, 2012 - DELRAY BEACH, Fla. – Few people know more about the history and life at Harbour’s Edge than Betty Edwards. The current administrative support services director, she started working at the senior living community as office manager before it opened its doors. This summer, residents and staff are celebrating the 25th Anniversary of Harbour’s Edge with a variety of special events and activities. For Edwards, it’s been a time of many changes, a few constants…and she now sees a future full of pioneering plans to enhance the lives of older adults.

“There have been a lot of physical changes at the community, but it’s some of the more intangible things that have really helped promote the sense of vibrancy at Harbour’s Edge,” says Edwards. “In many ways, the expectations of today’s seniors are different than those of generations before, and we’re unfolding plans to stay ahead of changing desires and trends in the years to come. Consistently offering new opportunities to engage residents is what makes our community special.”

Current construction and renovations include a $2.2 million project to expand dining options and social areas, and to elevate interior and exterior amenities throughout the community. Later this year, the community will expand its auditorium and add classroom space.

“We’re always looking for ways to make residents’ lives even better, and all the enhancements and additions at the community demonstrate that commitment,” says Tom Smith, executive director at Harbour’s Edge. The continuing care retirement community is one of three in Delray Beach owned and operated by Lifespace Communities, Inc.

Since first opening, Harbour’s Edge has nearly doubled the number of maintenance-free independent living apartment homes, as well as the size of its health center. Last year, the community opened a brand-new fitness center, and added a variety of physical and intellectual wellness programs.

“The increase in the number of activities that residents are involved in is spectacular,” Edwards says. “On any given day, you’ll see our fitness center and different wellness programs packed. Today’s seniors have so many goals in life, and they value flexibility and having more control in life to achieve those goals.”

“Projects currently underway and plans for the coming years will provide even more choices and opportunities for residents to lead a balanced and fulfilling lifestyle,” Smith says.
   
In the coming years, plans at Harbour’s Edge include construction of a new building wing and wellness center with yoga classes, spa and massage services, and continually modernizing amenities. Plans also include additional outdoor dining options at the community and expanding the number of access points to the Intracoastal Waterway.
   
“What’s remained the same throughout all my years here, is how appreciative residents are of every effort to energize the lifestyle at our community,” Edwards says.
