Australia’s only online community management conference brings social media talents to Melbourne

Community and social media managers in dozens of industries from all over Australia will converge in Melbourne on Thursday 13 and Friday 14 September, to meet and learn from online community idols, and swap war stories.

swarm – founded by leading Australian community managers Venessa Paech and Alison Michalk -- unites those on the front line of our social media in a one of a kind event.

Community and social media managers in dozens of industries from all over Australia will converge in Melbourne on Thursday 13 and Friday 14 September, to meet and learn from online community idols, and swap war stories.

“The ability to create and manage communities is becoming a distinguishing feature of successful businesses. swarm is for knowledge sharing on the art and science of community management,” says co-founder Alison Michalk, former community manager for Australia’s largest parenting community (Essential Baby).

"Organisations are still struggling with defining and understanding community management. Despite the fact many people are embracing social media and expect to make money from it, many community managers are isolated, with little internal support for the realities of their roles.”

swarm features top community managers and thought leaders, including Justin Isaf, Community Manager for the Huffington Post, Maria Ogneva, Global Head of Community for Yammer (recently purchased by Microsoft for $1.2 billion), Head of Internet Studies at Curtin University, Matthew Allen; and social media consultant and author Laurel Papworth.
Other speakers include Social Entrepreneur of the Year David Hood, government and citizen engagement specialist Craig Thomler, Conversation.EDU editor Jane Rawson and social strategist Stephen Johnson.

Topics include: the key differences between social networks and communities, how to build a movement, scaling online community, what role gender and age plays in social media management, managing an ‘always on’ job, the future of community management as a profession, and more.

First results of the first annual Australian and New Zealand Community Management Survey will also be revealed (inspired by the U.S State of Community Management report).

“Community management is one of the fastest growing industries on the planet,” explains co-founder Venessa Paech (former Lonely Planet/BBC Worldwide Community Manager).

“As businesses, brands, governments, organisations and movements around the world look to harness the power of social networks and community ties, specialist practitioners are being employed and empowered at every level to grow and optimise these communities.”

Legal and governance issues for community managers will also be under the microscope, in the wake of the Australian Advertising Standards Board ruling that Australian brands are legally accountable for the content generated by fans on Facebook pages.

Social media legal specialist Jennifer Duxbury (NineMSN) will hold a workshop to give community managers the edge in staying safe and smart.

“Professional moderation is an important part of creating healthy communities,” stresses Paech. “Currently there’s a knowledge gap around this in Australia and some apathetic attitudes about ‘leveraging’ community.”

swarm boasts an in-built social program, and adopts an ‘unconference’ approach intended to catalyse connections and conversation without bureaucracy.

The inaugural swarm was held in November 2011 in Sydney. Participants included community managers from Dell, U.N, AMP, Foxtel, Australian Broadcasting
