Dear editor,

Towards the end of last year you very kindly allowed me some space to make an important announcement concerning big lottery funding  for world war II veterans /wives or widows to return to where they fought.  I would like to express my deepest gratitude to you.

As a direct result of your kind cooperation I was able to locate a good number of veterans who would dearly love to return to places they served ranging from North Europe, Mediteranean, North Africa, Singapore, Thailand and Java.

However regrettably  thus far as soon as a group comes together around half seem to drop out due to illness-falls/fractures, and sadly death. As it is at the moment none of the proposed tours will take place unless I can increase the numbers. The thought of having to disappoint them is something I am hoping will not happen.

In the circumstances may I prevail upon your generosity once more? I shall not write again on this matter as due to their ages etc. its now or never.

Below is a copy of what I wrote to you last time.

I wrote to you on behalf of World War II veterans who, due to a lack of advertising, may not have been aware that in 2012 financial grants, Heroes Return II,  will become  available from the Big Lottery Fund to enable veterans to pay a visit of remembrance to the theatre of war that they were involved in.

Veterans, male or female, widows, and widowers of veterans, can all apply. The offer also extends to- Merchant Seamen, as well as WAAF’s and ATS who worked closely with active personnel.

As a result of my letter I have been successful in locating a goods number of veterans and or their widows.
This great news is also couple with some quite bad news. Unfortunatley due to the age and poor health of many, the tour groups keeps collapsing.
It appears that the number of veterans claiming these grants were far less than anticipated resulting in these grants being extended during 2012.. It would be extremely helpful if you can find space in your newspaper to make these details known so that veterans, who will now be aged 80 and over, may still take advantage of these grants and plan a visit.

The grants range from £150 to cover travel and accommodation for veteran, spouse and carer, within the UK,  £1,300  to Northern Europe and £5.500 to the Far East.

As I have received a  grant for a visit I made last December, I would be more than willing to advise any of your readers on how and where to claim..

It would also be most helpful, and if you have time and space, to reproduce this letter on your web edition.

My name, email address and telephone number may be published ,
