Wedding photographer Dawn Dutton, co-director of dawndutton.co.nz, won a Silver award with Merit in the 2011 Kodak Gold Awards for one of her wedding photography albums. This in itself might not seem that noteworthy. However, at the time of taking the photographs, Dawn was battling a medical condition and was in constant pain. Now that she is recovering from going under the knife, winning further awards should be a cinch.
Although Dawn and her husband, Mike, started the photography business on a small scale in 2006, they only registered Dawn Dutton Photography last year. Unfortunately, Dawn’s health started to decline just as the business started to take off. She did not slow down at all and still threw herself into her work with her trademark passion and perfectionism.
This year Dawn has her eye set on winning the ‘Best Emerging Business’ award in the Westpac Business Excellence Awards run by the Northland Chamber of Commerce. Alongside this category she has also entered the ‘Customer Choice’ and ‘Creative Arts’ sections of this competition. These awards are for Dawn Dutton Photography as a whole, although she is best known for her wedding photography, for which her services are booked out a year in advance.
The New Zealand Institute of Professional Photographers runs an annual print competition, which recognises excellence in photography. Dawn is showcasing her wedding photographs in the ‘Wedding’ category, and is hopeful of some recognition.
With her health rapidly improving, Dawn is expanding the commercial side of her business and will undoubtedly be looking for competitions to enter in this field. If her commercial photography becomes as successful as her wedding photography, she will need a bigger cabinet in which to display all her awards.
