Aug. 10, 2012 - PRLog -- Kathleen Buckalew agrees to exhibit her art at Root Gourmet & Nage Restaurant in Rehoboth Beach
Rehoboth Beach, Delaware – August 10, 2012 – Root Gourmet and Nage Restaurant will unveil the “The Face of Farming,” a collection of photography by award winning artist Kathleen Buckalew, on Thursday, August 16th at 5pm. The unveiling will include an hors d’ oeuvres reception at Root Gourmet followed by a Farm to Table Dinner featuring Fifer Orchards at Nage Restaurant. Kathleen Buckalew’s work highlights local farmers and the beauty of their craft. Nage and Root Gourmet cook with local ingredients and are dedicated to supporting local agriculture. The restaurants and the photographer hope their combined efforts will help raise awareness of the importance of local farming.
Kathleen Buckalew is a member of the Diamond State Branch of the National League of American Pen Women, the Delaware Press Association, Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts, the Center for the Creative Arts, and is an active member of a group she co-founded, called the Brandywine Photo Collective. She is a native of Wilmington, DE, and a graduate of the University of Delaware, with a BA in Art. After working in the photography lab of the Delaware Art Museum for a year and a half following graduation, she re-located to Washington, DC to work at the National Gallery of Art. Her duties included copy work, and making archival prints from glass plate, nitrate and film negatives for the Archives Department. Ms. Buckalew then became the photographer for the Design & Exhibition Department of the Gallery. In that position, she photographed all aspects of the temporary exhibitions, from planning and construction through all phases up to the final installation. Her work at the Gallery has been seen in various publications, including books on the East Wing, brochures, annual reports and slide presentations and was instrumental in winning competitions for exhibition design. Kathleen commented, “For years, I’ve wanted to photograph our disappearing farms, before they are gone forever. In the first six months of doing this work, I spent almost every weekend driving around Delaware, photographing and interviewing farmers. I drove more than 6,000 miles, shot 2,783 B&W negatives and 1,962 color slides. I made 1,261 B&W prints, scanned 418 slides and made 69 color prints, conducted and transcribed (or had transcribed) 38 interviews, and wrote all the statements
accompanying the photographs. And since that was over five years ago, those numbers have increased significantly.”
Nage Restauarnt and Root Gourmet are committed to supporting local agriculture. Both restaurants purchase local produce and have solid relationships with many local farmers. “We are lucky to have Kathleen exhibit her art here. I am thrilled,” says Kathy McDonald, the Nage employee that coordinated the partnership between Nage and Ms. Buckalew. “Please Stop in to see these great photographs of dedicated farmers in our local community,” says Rich Garrahan, General Manger of Root Gourmet. “It is an honor for us to help showcase Delaware farmers.”
The “Face of Farming” exhibition at Nage Restaurant and Root Gourmet will begin August 16, 2012 with a public reception held at Root Gourmet, 19724 Coastal Hwy., Rehoboth Beach from 5-6pm, followed by a Farm to Table Dinner featuring Fifer Orchards next door at Nage.
