Aug. 9, 2012 - NIFF Film Society will wrap up its Summer Film Series with the classic movie “Dr. Strangelove”
on Sept. 4 at 7 p.m. at Silverspot Cinema in Naples. PNC Wealth Management is the official 2012 sponsor of NIFF Film Society.
“Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb,” commonly known as “Dr. Strangelove,”
is a 1964 black comedy film which satirizes the nuclear scare. The film was directed, produced, and co-written by Stanley Kubrick and the star-studded cast includes Peter Sellers, George C. Scott, Sterling Hayden, James Earl Jones, and Slim Pickens.
“Dr. Strangelove”
is about an insane United States Air Force general who orders a nuclear attack on the Soviet Union as the President of the United States, his advisors, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and a Royal Air Force officer frantically try to recall the bombers to prevent a nuclear apocalypse. The story also separately follows the crew of one B-52 as they try to complete their mission and drop the bomb.
The film is historically important and in 1989, the United States Library of Congress deemed the film "culturally significant"
and selected it for preservation in the National Film Registry. It was listed as number three on AFI's “100 Years...100 Laughs.”
Tickets for “Dr. Strangelove”
are $25 per person, and include a movie ticket, choice of house wine, beer or 12 oz. fountain drink, savory bites and a sweet treat. Current NIFF members will also receive complimentary promo-sized popcorn. Following the feature, there will be a lively group discussion about the film.
