Aug. 8, 2012 - PRLog -- Maxine Thompson, whose married name is now Phillips, attended Excelsior in War, West Virginia before integration in 1965.  On August 11, 2012 she is being inducted into the West Virginia All Black Schools Sports and Academic Hall of Fame along with more than 100 others.

Phillips will receive the highest award at the induction ceremony, known as the Greatest of the Great Academic Lifetime Achievement Award.  She says, “I am honored to be recognized in this way for my accomplishments in academics and other work over my lifetime.  I am humbled that my school has chosen me to be among the recipients to receive the highest honor you can receive.”

After leaving the Mountain State, Phillips spent more than 25 years in the corporate world as a human resources consultant for a number of Fortune 500 companies.  In 2010, she opened the doors of her own business in Raleigh, NC.  Phillips says her passion to help people of all ages, especially the youth, began during her early academic years at the segregated elementary school.  Her company, GAMMS Unlimited is a career coaching business that helps individuals discover their natural gifts and abilities in order to achieve a well-designed work-life balance to live their best life and do their best work.

The induction ceremony will be held at the Marriott Hotel in Charleston on Saturday, August 11, 2012.  Phillips says she is looking forward to it.  “I want to help preserve the history of black education in West Virginia and to serve as a role model and mentor.”
