New York Women’s Athletic League (NYWAL) Hosts the First Annual Basketball Invitational Tournament
New York City - In a city of more than eight million residents, there are few opportunities for organizations catering exclusively to women to come together to cross-market and increase participation in sports among women in NYC. To remedy this, NYWAL is set to host the First Annual NYWAL Basketball Invitational Tournament, a one-day tournament with a zero participation fee for invited teams. With athletics as the backdrop, we seek to use the tournament as a medium to foster camaraderie among disparate groups of women in the City of New York through the spirit of competition. Creating an annual tournament will unify leagues in the city that are catering to and providing athletic opportunities for women.
The goal for the First Annual NYWAL Basketball Invitational Tournament is to bring together four leagues who are currently offering women’s basketball in NYC: the New York Women’s Athletic League (NYWAL), the NYC Gay Basketball League – Women’s Division, the Rucker Women’s Basketball League and Team Jordan. The goals of the tournament are to:
• Improve visibility of women’s amateur basketball in NYC
• Create opportunities to cross-market between leagues to help strengthen each league
• Increase participation in sports among women in NYC
• Provide athletic opportunities for women through team and individual sports
• Establish a foundation to build the infrastructure to grow the tournament in the future
On Saturday, August 25, 2012, NYWAL will host the First Annual Basketball Invitational Tournament. The inaugural tournament will be played from Noon – 5:00 p.m. at the Alfred E. Smith Recreation Center, 80 Catherine Street (Manhattan). For more information, please visit our website at www.nywal.com.
