Disruptions in Supply Chain industry cost UK businesses £200,000 a year

Aug. 8, 2012 - PRLog -- Supply chain disruptions are costing small and mid-sized UK tech firms an average of £207,000 a year, according to research findings published by Insurance company Zurich.

The recent report, The Weakest Link UK Plc’s Supply Chain, which investigated the practices of the supply chain industry, revealed that 88%of businesses had experienced significant disruptions or delays in their supply chain over the past twelve months, with the figure rising to 97%for those in the manufacturing industry.

500 businesses with annual revenues between £5 million and £300 million, across five sectors were investigated as part of the research spanning from manufacturing, sport leisure, wholesale, entertainment, technology to food and drink.

In the report the technology sector was recorded as the worst hit with companies experiencing an average of five weeks of disruption due to supply chain challengers, with half experiencing a loss of sales and orders. 55 per cent of technology firms surveyed admitted they had not reviewed their supply chain arrangements in the last six months, citing ‘not having enough time’ and ‘too expensive’ as the main reasons for not doing so.

Chris Harries at recruitment specialists Core Talent Recruitment commented on the Weakest Link: UK Plc’s Supply Chain report stating, “Although supply chain jobs remain an essential part of the operations and success of a business, these latest findings show a variety of sectors are prone to severe supply chain disruptions that can dramatically affect their bottom line.”
