Chicago, IL (August 2012) Pocket Literacy Coach, LLC, - http://PocketLiteracy.com -  announced today that funding has been secured to offer the Pocket Literacy Coach program free of charge for 3-6 months to the first 30,000 Chicago parents who sign up. Pocket Literacy Coach is a Chicago education technology company helping parents be their child’s teacher at home. They send education activities to parents’ mobile phones. Pocket Literacy Coach is designed for parents with children ages 0-12 years of age and is proven by research to improve learning at home.

According to CEO and founder, Dr. Chris Drew, “Parents are the first and most important teachers that children and students will ever have. Long before a child goes off to Kindergarten, critical brain development, learning habits, attitudes, aptitude, socialization, etc. are being shaped by what is happening within the home learning environment.” Drew goes on to point out, “There’s over 4 decades of evidence from early childhood research, neuroscience, economics and psychology that testifies to the long-term impact of this type of early investment in our families and children. The teaching, learning, bonding and example-setting that happens at home, between parent and child, are crucial to each child’s future success in school and in life. And we can play a role in that success by empowering parents.”

In Chicago, The Ounce of Prevention Fund, Bright Horizons, KinderCare, Head Start, Educare and numerous other programs are making a difference in the lives of Chicago families every day. As well, the Mayor’s office recently announced that the city is pouring $10 million into early childhood education to support 2,000 more children. Because of their technology, Pocket Literacy Coach has the ability to support more families at a lower cost than all of these services combined.

Piggy-backing off the announcement from the Mayor’s office, Pocket Literacy Coach CEO and founder, Dr. Chris Drew, is announcing that the company is committed to broadening early childhood initiatives city-wide. They are doing so by contributing the company’s technology, expertise and mobile platforms.

Drew went on, “The value and importance of early childhood education intervention is indisputable. However, nearly ALL of the focus on early childhood education is on sending a child off to a program or day care setting. Very little focus is placed on supporting parents and families within the home to be a child’s best teacher. Strengthening the family and the home learning environment is the mission of Pocket Literacy Coach. We want to be a great partner to the parents and families of our city.”
Created by literacy expert Dr. Drew, the Pocket Literacy Coach system is an easy and convenient support program designed with the everyday parent in mind. A daily text message lesson is delivered to cell phones with a short, fun and creative learning activity that parents can use with their 0-12 year old children to help them promote emerging literacy skills. Text messages are delivered five times per week to provide busy parents with guaranteed quality time with their children that builds positive learning habits. Normally there is a $5.99 per month charge for Pocket Literacy Coach. But that charge is being waved for Chicago families. Families outside are welcome to sign up. Priority will be given to Chicago families.

Based on developmental levels, learning outcomes, cutting-edge literacy research and years of experience, each mini-lesson is designed by Ph.D. literacy scholar Drew and a team of expert teachers. The objective of the Pocket Literacy Coach program is to provide parents with unique and fun research-based lessons to use with their kids so they can create learning moments anywhere and everywhere.

Research has proven that using educational text messages not only enhances parental involvement, but also helps parents make their children better readers.
To enroll in the Pocket Literacy Coach program for free families can either go to www.PocketLiteracy.com and use the sign up form on the home page or they can sign up from their phones by texting “SMARTER” to 46786.

"When reading to your child ask them to predict what happens next. How will the story end? Why do they think that? Encourage your child to look at the pictures."

"Practice counting change up to $1. Explain that it takes 100 pennies, 20 nickels, 10 dimes, or 4 quarters. Help child explore different ways to make a $1."
