Wilderman Group Appoints Tom van Duursen as General Manager at Cleveland Country Club in Shelby, NC

Aug. 7, 2012 - PRLog -- When making the announcement, Mr. Julius cited Mr. van Duursen’s 30+ years of experience as a hospitality professional with expertise in Private Club Management, Club Consultancy, Food & Beverage Operation with multiple outlets, Catering and Conference Services.  

Tom’s diverse experiences and education have provided him with opportunities to develop a broad perspective of and approach to the numerous elements that contribute to the success of an organization in the hospitality industry. He was born in The Netherlands and raised in Singapore and in Oxford, England.  He began his hospitality career at the London Hilton and later at the Sonesta Amsterdam. He earned the “Grand Diploma” in the culinary program from the Cordon Bleu in Paris, France and moved to the United States where he enrolled at Cornell University.  He gained hotel experience at the Sonesta Key Biscayne (Miami) in various Food & Beverage positions and moved to Boca Raton, Florida, to the 5-Star, 5-Diamond Boca Raton Resort & Club where he served in a variety of positions.

For 20 years, Tom worked with 5-Star, 5-Diamond resorts throughout the country including the Broadmoor, (Colorado Springs, CO) and the American Club (Kohler, WI) in a variety of roles such as Director of Catering, Director of Food & Beverage and Hotel General Manager. As Club General Manager, Tom specializes in increasing operational efficiencies with substantial monetary impact while improving the quality of services within the country club sector.

In addition to his General Manager responsibilities, Tom has also consulted with clubs across the nation to help them identify opportunities for savings and increasing revenues. Some of these clubs include Hunting Hills Country Club (Roanoke, VA), Green Island Country Club (Columbus, GA), and Greensboro Country Club (Greensboro, NC) where he provided operational and market analysis along with financial reviews, staffing levels, payroll, physical plant, decision-making process, purchasing, menu development, operating hours, quality control and food and beverage expenses.

As General Manager, Tom leads the management team and assumes full responsibility for all aspects of day-to-day operations including golf, grounds, maintenance, food + beverage, and is directly responsible for strategic planning, P+L accountability, marketing, branding and member relations. He is responsible for improving quality standards while maximizing operational efficiencies through cost-effective financial strategies.   He supervises all employees of the Club and creates a strong service culture through each of them.  

Recognized as one of the premier private country clubs in the western North Carolina region, Cleveland Country Club was established in 1927 and continues to provide members and guests with genuine warmth and high-end hospitality.  

Located in Shelby, NC, less than one hour west of Charlotte, the classically designed, 18-hole Cleveland Course features 6,389 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 72. The course rating is 71.2 and it has a slope rating of 126 on Bermuda grass. The Club also features numerous clay and hard surface tennis courts, a delightful pool, and recently renovated clubhouse.  The Club offers a variety of amenities and facilities to retirees, weekend travelers, and families.
