CNYAHEC Continuing Education Manager Free Grant Funded RN Refresher Course to be hosted at Broome Community College August 13 – 17 Registered Nurses (RN’s) from Central New York and the Appalachian region have the opportunity to refresh their practical hands on nursing skills through a grant funded course being held at Broome Community College August 13 -17. Central New York Area Health Education (CNYAHEC), the sponsoring agency, received an ARC grant (Appalachian Regional Commission) to educate and train two cohorts of RN’s through a partnership with Broome Community College and to develop an online educational course to refresh RN’s clinical skills to be hosted on a new educational platform www.educarece.org. The RN refresher course is designed to train nurses (RN’s) that left have the profession, taken time off for family, or chosen to work in various settings and may no longer feel competent to return to the clinical setting. The Central New York Health Education Center (CNYAHEC) is committed to help nurses return to the workforce and this RN Refresher course provides the practical training that will assist them in their goals. The RN refresher course had nineteen attendees in August 2011. One grant participant Bobbi Sweazey stated, “I so enjoyed the course last year. Immediately after finishing the RN Refresher course last August I found employment. I will recommend it to any nurses that I come in contact with for sure It's been so good for me to get back into nursing!!! course s. The course is a great way for nurses who may have been out of the workforce, in a specialized setting to review all the general concepts so they feel comfortable when they make a change to a more general setting as well as nurses who may have been away from the profession and now choosing to return. Registered nurses (RNs) represent the largest, single component of the health care profession with an estimated 2.7 million RNs in the United States. According to a report from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the U.S. currently has a nurse shortage of nearly 150,000 RNs and will have a shortage of more than 800,000 RNs by the year 2020. Established in 2001, CNYAHEC is a local, non-profit organization located in Cortland, New York whose mission is to promote improvements in the supply, training, development and distribution of health professionals in a 14 county area of Central New York. With state and federal funding, dedicated staff, and a growing network of community partners throughout the region, CNYAHEC is supporting today's health care workforce and growing tomorrow's.
