Urban Hitz Radio Defends Decision To Play Uncensored Music.

Aug. 6, 2012 - PRLog -- "Can't a young N**** get money anymore?" The smash hit - Cold; performed by recording artist Kanye West, is what Internet Radio station Urban Hitz Radio loves to play on a hot Monday afternoon in their South Charlotte Studios, where the station recently held an over the phone Interview regarding the decency of current Hip-Hop/Rap Music. As the song progresses, you can hear station owner and Music Director, David Tucker, singing along with the profane laced chorus.

This is what Rap is all about these days, Says Tucker. In an Industry that has flat out abandoned any kind of decency; Women are AGAIN, openly called B****** and Caucasian Women are now called White B****** in many Rap songs. This is acceptable to Recording Executives and no one really puts up an argument anymore. So, that's how it is.

Another popular song, "No Lie" by recording artist 2 Chainz, has a chorus that reads: "If I take you out of the picture, I know real N***** won't miss you!" The chorus is sung by the popular rapper Drake. Tucker says that this song is the #1 most played and requested song on Urban Radio stations across the USA. And of course Urban Hitz Radio, that bills itself the station where R&B and Hip Hop Connect, loves the song as well.

The station says that they pride themselves on being in a unique position, with quite a few other mainstream Independent Internet Radio stations, that play uncensored Rap music. The station is not an FCC licensed broadcast, and Urban Hitz Radio does not have to adhere to any governing entity that dictates what can be played and what should be edited. They also say that the station does not get paid to play any music. Something that traditional AM/FM stations were accused of some years ago.

But just where is the line drawn with all this profanity laced music? Many people would love to blame Rap music on the kids who shoot up their schools and take out violence on their parents. After all, Rap music is frequented by more White teens than Black teens, That's a fact. However, Tucker says that Rap music is not the responsible party and never has been. The Parents are the ones responsible for their own kids. Rap music is just the scape goat, because the Executives allow the music to go wherever it damn well pleases, to make a dollar. The fact is no one wants to hear boring music. Rap music has to have some kind of substance or energized theme that gets people going. Such as the song called N***** In Paris, performed by Jay-Z and Kanye West. Another smash hit, riddled with N**** profane laced lyrics.Look, Hip Hop music from my era, the 80's is dead. It's not coming back - EVER, says Tucker. There is a vast difference in Rap from the 90's and Rap form the 2000's. 90's rap had quality, energy and meaning. One 2000 hit, it seems to have all changed, just like that, overnight. Rap no longer has meaning or quality, because the 90's Rappers have been shut out and turned into outsiders looking in. In other words, they are now Independent artists. Calling today's Rap, Hip Hop is a slap in the face to true Hip Hop artists of 15-30 years ago. Hip Hop was The Bridge by MC Shan, and South Bronx by Boogie Down Productions.
These types of quality songs, you just will never find in today's music - ever!


Tucker also says, you'll find the N word in just about every main stream Rap song. Everyone's saying it, because it sells. And it isn't Black teens buying in droves either. The state of Rap music today is down right awful. But what goals and aspirations do these young artists have today? None that are good, when all they grew up listening to, was profane laced music. So, that's all they know. Black kids and White kids alike, are openly using the N word. And in a time where Parents themselves openly refer to their kids and other kids from the block, as N this and N that, why would it not be ok to play music that is unedited? It all starts with in-home parenting. On the other side of that coin, many of these young Rappers are so gifted and talented themselves, that they know the rights and wrongs, but in order to make it as a rapper, this is what they have to do. And if not, they will be on the outside looking in.

Is is ok for a White rapper such as Eminem or Mac Miller to omit the N word from their song, but ok for a Black rapper to use it again, and again?

Oh because they are Black, it's ok and the target audience will say it's ok. That's kind of a Double standard. But it's not OK, for any person who is not Black, to openly use the N word. Tucker, says it's complicated and one issue that probably will never be solved, unless the recording Industry sets standards when they create contracts for these artists to make Millions, on hyped up music. Even Jennifer Lopez used the N word in one of her famous re-mixes from the 90's; I'm Real.

As it stands right now, Urban Hitz Radio says they have no plans to start playing edited music of any kind. The station only wants to play an Album version, and shuns any re-worked studio version/edit of music they play. It's not Original and it sounds terrible with all the bleeping and cut-outs. And if it were the original, then there would be no reason to re-record or edit a song. If Artists want to spend their time and energy in a recording studio editing a perfect recording, to bleep out what should not have been recorded in the first place, that's their and their Producers problem. We just won't play it. Besides why would anyone want to hear an edited Radio version of a song, and then go to the store or online portal, to Purchase the CD that has Parental Advisory: Explicit Lyrics written on it?

The fact of the matter is, our listener base is 80% Caucasian, and more than 75% of those listeners aren't even from the USA. Tucker says, that's the magic of the Internet. There is no transmitter or Tower being used at our station. We don't just serve a limited user base or area. The Internet is an open medium and people can listen to whatever they want to. Our listeners love the music and if it were something that they felt uneasy about, they would surely let us know.

Playing edited and un-edited music on Internet Radio is a personal decision. As there are no rules to abide by in that area. Whether or not advertisers want to stand behind a station and use their platform to sell a product, again is a personal
decision...on the Internet.

Again, in an industry where there are no rules when signing artists to deals, stating that their music must adhere to all levels of decency, the question remains: Why would it not be ok to play uncensored music??
