The August 2012 “San Diego Business Of The Month” has been awarded to “Special Olympics - San Diego”. Special Olympics Southern California - San Diego offers free, year-round sports programs and competitions for athletes with intellectual disabilities. Special Olympics is unique in that it provides for competition at all levels of ability by assigning special needs children to competition divisions based on both age and actual performance. Even athletes in the lowest divisions may advance all the way to the World Finals.
Special Olympics began when Eunice Kennedy Shriver created a vision of a summer day camp for young people with intellectual disabilities, which she began in her own backyard. Mrs. Shriver's goal was to learn what these individuals could do in sports and other activities. The Shriver family, has carried on the tradition of involvement with the organization to this day. Special Olympics board member, Emmy award-winning journalist and former First Lady of California, Maria Shriver, takes a personal and active role in having Special Olympics explore the idea of a Dignity Revolution that is focused on uniting and inspiring people in communities all around the world to move us in a more open, inclusive and tolerant direction.
