Bestselling Beauty Author and Head Stylist for RNC gives tips on making a positive first impression

Bestselling beauty author and celebrity makeup artist Michelle Phillips has been hired for this year's RNC in Tampa. In this article she relates some powerful tips on how to make a positive professional first impression.

Aug. 2, 2012 - PRLog -- Tampa, FL (August 1, 2012) – With the Republican National Convention just a few weeks away, speakers are hoping to make a powerful, positive impact on potential voters. Researchers at NYU have shown that we have exactly 7 seconds in which to make that impression so it is crucial that those who take the stage look their best.  That said, whether you are trying to land a job in the highest office or just land a job, it is important to know how to project the right image for big success.

Michelle Phillips, author of the bestselling book The Beauty Blueprint and Head of Makeup and Image for this year’s RNC, has worked with world leaders and broadcast news journalists for 20 years and knows firsthand that you never get a second chance at a first impression.

When asked about her work at the RNC and how it relates to people in the professional world Phillips said, “My job is to ensure that the viewer’s focus is on the message rather than distractions in personal image such as makeup, hair, and wardrobe.” She continued, “Think about it, how many times have you watched a newscast and thought ‘what is wrong with her hair’ or ‘that’s an awful tie?’ When you are distracted you are not paying attention to what the person has to say. That is as relevant in politics as it is our professional lives. It’s important that we take the time to create a polished image so that we are perceived as knowledgeable, credible, and trustworthy in our fields. A study by Social Psychology Quarterly stated, “People who dress in a professional manner everyday are twice as likely to be promoted and earn up to 20% more income.”

With so many competing for fewer jobs or working to keep the ones they have Phillips has some suggestions that can be as important as tuning up your resume.

-   Dress up to move up. Look around. How does your manager or supervisor dress? It’s a common business practice to promote or hire those who already look the part.
-   Invest in a Core Wardrobe.  Although many of us are on a tight budget it is important that we spend a bit more on a few key pieces that will be the foundation of our professional look.  Foundation pieces should be in black, navy, khaki, or grey, and can be mixed and matched with colorful accessories to create the look you want.
-   Less is more. When it comes to hair and makeup save the dark eye shadow, bright lipstick, and big hair for date night. Stick to neutral colors and either put hair up or style it in a manner that is not distracting.
-   Keep the bling to a minimum. Skip the big hoops and loud bangle bracelets, wear low heels and hosiery if you wear a skirt, and a professional bag or briefcase should hold your belongings.
