How 9 Lifelong Friends Use Pound Cakes & Acts of Kindness To Spread Happiness

Secret Givers Trek Across America Leaving Behind Happiness In All 50 States

Aug. 2, 2012 - PRLog -- Because August has been declared Happiness Happens Month, The 9 Nanas are launching a campaign to make America a happier place.

For thirty-one days, instead of just focusing their efforts on those in need in the Mid-South, the ladies extend their reach. During the entire month of August, The 9 Nanas will select an unsuspecting recipient from each state in hopes of brightening their day.

Last year was a success, with recipients receiving dinner certificates (tax and gratuity)  to some of the nation's finest restaurants; much needed items for the local YWCA Women's Shelter; and The 9 Nanas' loaves. They even helped a single mom of four in Birmingham purchase a vehicle.

This year's event includes many of the same gifts. However, they decided to add overnight getaways.

As the Nanas see it, "There are so many people hurting and if we could make them smile, even for a little while, then we've won half the battle."

Here's an abbrieviated list of past recipients:

Sandy Clark of Delaware was chosen for her work with young girls. A former beauty contestant, Clark produces a beauty "withiin" pageant for middle-school girls and organizes an Annual Juneteenth Celebration in Wilmington.

Leigh Hine, wife and mother of two small children, was thrilled with her gift. According to Hines, "I've learned some things aren't too good to be true. A great dinner out at Cafe Tiramisu without kids and sensational pound cakes. The only thing that cost us was a sitter. This is a true tale of happiness."

Hillary Lynn was chosen for her warm smile and ability to make each client feel special. Lynn, a Broker Associate with Remax of Cherry Creek in Denver, worked to help her team sell more than $300 million dollars worth of real estate last year.

South Carolina's unsung hero was Deborah Boone. Boone, the PASS Coordinator, works tirelessly to ensure the District's homeless children don't fall through the education crack. Then, a recent empty-nester, Deborah used her dinner certificate to treat her husband to a nice dinner at Saluda's. The cakes--she enjoyed all by herself.

Local recipients include Kelly Golden and Eddie Goss of Memphis and Blanchie Lincoln of Southaven, whom The 9 Nanas affectionately call Mother Blanchie. Both Golden and Goss received dinner certificates and The 9 Nanas' pound cakes. Lincoln, who celebrated her 100th birthday in February, welcomes a special package regularly, "still wonders why strangers would do something like that."
