“In a cross between the ‘Full Monty’ and ‘Calendar Girls,’ these gentlemen are showing that cancer affects us all: young and old, in-shape, and well, not-so-in shape,” says Matthew Pickus, president and founder of 60-Mile Men, Inc. “People sometimes wonder why men participate in a breast cancer event. Cancer does not discriminate. Not only are 1% of breast cancer victims male, but cancer of every sort affects our mothers and fathers, sons and daughters. Anyone that has had a loved one with a cancer diagnoses knows that this affects everyone.”
The net proceeds of 60-Mile Men go to benefit the Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure. Each participant in the Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure is required to raise a minimum of $2,300. The money raised by the 60-Mile Men will be donated to the event in the name of the 12 men in the current calendar, all of whom have been touched by cancer. You can find at least one 60-Mile Calendar Man at each of the 15 3-Day events in 2010.
I started walking when a friend asked me to join their team. The experience and people I met along the way sealed the deal and convinced me to walk again and again. I decided I wanted to see different cities, so my team and I decided we’d travel to a different city each year to walk. In 2008 I met the most incredible woman and survivor whom my team “adopted” over the course of three days in Chicago. She continued her battle with cancer until she passed away in June 2011 at the age of 35. I believe the 60 miles I walk does make a difference.
The calendar men have participated in dozens of Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure events and will do anything (obviously!) to help support those with breast cancer, and find a cure. As the calendar states: “Real Men Wear Pink…Or Nothing At All.” The 2011 Calendar will be unveiled at our annual kick-off party, held in southeastern Michigan in June. Calendars will be on-sale immediately afterward. More information, as well as calendars and apparel items to support the cause, can be found at www.60milemen.org

About Susan G. Komen for the Cure
Nancy G. Brinker promised her dying sister, Susan G. Komen, she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever. In 1982, that promise became Susan G. Komen for the Cure® and launched the global breast cancer movement. Today, Komen for the Cure is the world’s largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists fighting to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find the cures. Thanks to events like the Komen Race for the Cure® and the Breast Cancer 3-Day, the organization has invested nearly $1 billion to fulfill its promise, becoming the largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer in the world.
