SUMMER GRID: A Relational Project by Quintín Rivera-Toro

Part of an on going series of interventions – and in the spirit of relational esthetics – SUMMER GRID is a platform for social engagement as its own form of a visual art experience.

PRLog - Aug. 1, 2012 - PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Yellow Peril Gallery is pleased to present SUMMER GRID, an outdoor installation event by multidisciplinary artist Quintín Rivera-Toro.  This single day event is free to the general public and runs on Saturday, 25 August 2012, from 2PM to 9PM.

Part of an on going series of interventions – and in the spirit of relational esthetics –  SUMMER GRID is a platform for social engagement as its own form of a visual art experience.

The installation comprises a large arrangement of over two dozen "kiddie pools" and "backyard waterworks" in The Plant Courtyard adjacent to Yellow Peril Gallery. This single day event encourages the participation of young children (with guardians) and adults alike.

Rivera-Toro is known for his site-specific art installations and performances.  “My approach to art making consists of reacting to social phenomena through my individual experience, often resulting in the visual investigation of isolated, self-absorbed imagery,” he says.  “Mass media, advertising, pop culture, social trends, history, familiar structures; any given environment which reflects the collective experience can be a source of fuel for the often nostalgic, sometimes rebellious, sometimes idealistic manifestations of the work.”

As an artist with a young child, Rivera-Toro’s recent body of work taps into a source of wonder that is critical when engaging with children.  This is evident in his most recent public art installation “The Bridge” at Dexter Training Ground on the West Side of Providence, RI, which is intended to connect people and be a place for gathering and interacting.

SUMMER GRID will be streamed live on Yellow Peril Gallery’s Facebook page (http://facebook.com/yellowperilgallery) during the event’s run on Saturday, 25 August 2012 from 2PM to 9PM.
