NESHAMINY HIGH SCHOOL GRAD AND CURRENT BUCKS COUNTY COMMUNITY COLLEGE STUDENT AWARDED FERKO SCHOLARSHIP
The Joseph A. Ferko String Band awards Marissa Robinson with the 15th Annual Jimmy King Memorial Scholarship

PHILADELPHIA, PA. – August 1, 2012 – The Joseph A. Ferko String Band has been a model of pride and professionalism since its inception in 1922. Its blend of quality and excellence has made Ferko a household name not only the world of Mummery, but also in the hearts of people around the world.

The Jimmy King Memorial Scholarship Fund was created in 1998 in honor of longtime Ferko member, musician and great friend, Jimmy King. He was an amazing person both inside and out, and when Jimmy passed away, Ferko sought out ways to remember his legacy, honor him and introduce young musicians to the hobby of Mummery. The band then formed the Jimmy King Memorial Scholarship Fund.
This year's Jimmy King Scholarship recipient is Marissa Robinson.Marissa says she is passionate about music like Jimmy King. At the age of nine she started playing the violin and several years later she picked up the clarinet. Marissa states that,“Three years after I started the clarinet I decided to play saxophone so that I could be in jazz band. My playing was so terrible that I did not audition. The next year I was truly committed to playing the saxophone. This turned out to be one of the best decisions of my life because I am now a three year member of the Uptown String Band on tenor saxophone.” Over the years Marissa says she has worked hard to be the best musician that she can be. While at Neshaminy High, Marissa has performed in BCMEA county band, PMEA district band, Neshaminy High Schools Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band,Marching Band,Jazz Band and Orchestra. Currently Marissa is a music major at Bucks County Community College and in the fall of 2013 she plans on transferring to Temple University to continue her studies. Marissa says, “By getting a degree in music education I will be able to share my love of music with others. Also I hope to use what I learn to help my string band grow musically.”

Extracurricular activities at BCCC include the the ECO Club and Body Positve Club. Outside of school, Marissa is a proud member of the Uptown String Band where she plays the tenor saxophone. Marissa receives much encouragement from her fellow members in Uptown and would like to become more involved in helping the music department at Uptown.

Marissa’s current music teacher is Len Pierro, a current faculty member at Bucks County Community College.
Previous winners of the Jimmy King Memorial Scholarship included students from the Philadelphia, Bucks County and South Jersey region. Introducing young people to the hobby of Mummery is also the intention of the scholarship. The scholarship is a one-time payment of $500.
