A Man Called Bruce To Receive Songwriter Award

The Chattanooga Songwriters Association is scheduled to present their monthly award to a songwriter who has supported the organization from the beginning. The award for "Songwriter of the Month - July 2012" will be presented on August 9th.

Aug. 1, 2012 - PRLog -- Is Facebook really the place to get your news? I guess it can be, if you are talking about entertainment news. But, is it accurate? That's debatable. After all, you can barely trust the news presented by any media outlet these days.

However, when the Chattanooga Songwriters Association (CSA) made the following announcement today on their Facebook page, "CSA News Alert: A Man Called Bruce chosen as 'Writer of the Month' July 2012," they were telling the truth.

Thom Cavin, executive director of the CSA confirmed that Cleveland, TN based songwriter A Man Called Bruce has performed many times at the organization's Writer's Nights, including a performance at the first (and only, thus far) CSA Songwriter's Festival last November.

At the festival, Bruce performed on the same night as Steve Bogard, who is also the president of the Nashville Songwriter's Association International and the author of a slew of hit songs including George Strait's "Carried Away” and “Carrying Your Love With Me," Rascal Flatts' career-breaking "Prayin' For Daylight," as well as songs recorded by Marty Robbins, Jack Ingram, Dierks Bentley, Clay Walker, BlackHawk, Tanya Tucker, Steve Wariner, Patty Loveless, Eddy Raven, Reba McEntire, Lee Greenwood, Tim McGraw, Kenny Chesney, Restless Heart, Lonestar, Alabama, The Oak Ridge Boys and Diamond Rio. The night also included accomplished songwriter Roger Alan Wade who penned songs for country legends such as Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, George Jones and Hank Williams Jr.

Writer's Night is now a twice weekly event sponsored by the CSA since September 2011.

What is Writer's Night, you ask? It's a showcase where local and regional songwriters perform only their original songs. This is much different than an Open Mic night where amateurs go to play other people's songs. Of course, amateurs may apply to perform at a CSA's Writer's Night, but they should be prepared to play only their own songs and have the confidence to appear on the stage with seasoned songwriters such as Robby Hopkins, Summer Hullender, Bernie Faulkner, Kevin Lane, Troy Underwood, Anthony Quails, Charley Yates, Martha Ann Brooks, Jennifer Brumlow, and Pat Babb (all of which have already won the CSA's monthly award).

Mr. Cavin said of July's winner, "We look at A Man Called Bruce as a cut above. His dedication to his music and his prolific writing have brought forth from his mind more than 30 songs since he joined CSA last September." He went on to say, "In the past 11 months we've heard more than 1100 songs performed by over 400 songwriters. It was definitely Bruce's turn to win."

Chattanooga Songwriters Association's Writer's Nights are always FREE to the public and the writers. Writer's Nights are currently held every Tuesday at the Heritage House Arts & Civic Center (located in Heritage Park at 1428 Jenkins Road in Chattanooga, TN) and every Thursday at Meo Mio's Cajun Spirits (located at 4119 Cummings Hwy in Chattanooga) from 7 to 9pm.

Winning the 'Songwriter of the Month' award appears to have been a surprise to some of the recipients, especially some of those who were given the award after only appearing once at Writer's Night. But, it seems the award is not presented based on the number of performances, but in recognition of the quality of the writers' songs and their contribution to the local music scene.

"My wife saw the Facebook post announcing the award almost as soon as it happened," said A Man Called Bruce. "The timing was really weird."

When asked how he felt about winning the award, Bruce shared, "It's humbling to join the ranks of these other fine songwriters who have already won. I am sincerely honored." He added, "There are other songwriters at CSA who are just as deserving. If they stay with it, I'm sure their time will come."

You can see A Man Called Bruce receive his award and perform some of his songs on Thursday, August 9th at 7:00pm at Meo Mio's.
