Aug. 1, 2012 - PRLog -- Crowdfunding is the process of raising capital from the general public by utilizing social media and crowdfunding websites. It is normally used by startups (although that might change soon). This practice was legally prohibited until April 5, 2012 when President Barack Obama signed the JOBS bill.
Until President Obama signed the JOBS bill, investing in startup companies was limited to qualified institutions (known as investment banks) and wealthy investors.  This limited the amount of capital that a startup could raise.
