The site is open to the general public, but the RateTea editorial tea screens new users and reviews, in order to maintain the integrity of the site's rating database and ensure that it is as accurate a source of tea information as possible. This factor contributes to the smaller total size of reviews as compared to the other best-known tea review website open to the general public, Steepster.
Top reviewers and power reviewers of tea:
Top reviewers on RateTea are highlighted under the people section of the site. There are currently 10 reviewers who have reviewed at least 25 teas; this is currently the cutoff to get listed on the first page of reviewers. Top reviewers have their websites, and, if they have them, personal tea blogs highlighted on the site, with live hyperlinks.
Regions and styles represented:
RateTea has pages on individual types (called "styles") of tea, as well as the various brands of tea and tea-producing regions. The current reviews on the report span 79 different regions, which include levels of detail down to Chinese counties and Japanese prefectures. A total of 193 brands of tea and tea companies have been reviewed, and 129 distinct styles of tea, and this number will increase as RateTea adds increasing distinctions between different types of tea.
Alex Zorach still the top reviewer:
The most active reviewer is still Alex Zorach, the founder and editor-in-chief of the site, who has reviewed hundreds of teas. Zorach has been the top reviewer since the site's launch in September of 2009.
