Cultural Affairs and Community Volunteers Begin Cultural Restoration Initiative in Cavalaire Square

PRLog (Press Release) - Aug. 1, 2012 - The City of New Port Richey’s Cultural Affairs Committee and volunteers from the community came together Saturday, July 21 at Cavalaire Square to kick off the Cultural Restoration Initiative. The City’s Public Works Department pulled out dead shrubbery and repaired water and electrical services in the planters surrounding the square prior to the volunteer work day. Volunteers then planted 6, 12’ Drake Elms and Dune Sunflower (a Florida native plant), amended the soil with City mulch and finished the planters with decorative shell mulch with the assistance of Public Works employee, Tom Burley.

Volunteers included: Kira Atkinson, Kacey Atkinson Derek Smith, Mason Smith, Glena Sumrall, Keemer Atkinson, Lia Gallegos and Gina DiGregorio.

The Community Restoration Initiative is intended to restore culturally vital areas of the City through a partnership between Cultural Affairs, the citizens of New Port Richey and the City’s Public Works Department. The inaugural project is the rehabilitation of Cavalaire Square.

Built in 1998, Cavalaire Square was created to honor the relationship between New Port Richey and our sister city Cavalaire-sur-Mer, France. Many citizens are not even aware of its existence and it has fallen into disrepair over the years. This project is intended to bring new life to the square so it can once again be a magnet for community gatherings.

A second phase is planned for further restoration. The Cultural Affairs Committee is currently exploring grants and corporate sponsorship opportunities to fund future improvements.
