PRLog - Jul. 31, 2012 - DELAND – With the simple snip of a ribbon, Volusia County gained a new weapon in the on-going fight against cancer yesterday when Florida Hospital DeLand opened its Cancer Resource Center.

Located inside the hospital, the center is a partnership between Florida Hospital DeLand and the American Cancer Society. It provides free wigs, bras, prosthetics, scarves, and resources of support to anyone dealing with any type of cancer. Recipients do not need to be Florida Hospital DeLand patients.

Florida Hospital DeLand President and CEO, Mark LaRose, views the center as “essential” given the continual increase in cases of cancer diagnosis.

“Florida has the third highest cancer rate in the country,” said LaRose.  “In an effort to better serve our community, we are providing comprehensive cancer diagnosis and treatment through both our new Cancer Resource Center and our Cancer Institute.”

Florida Hospital DeLand’s Cancer Institute was renovated just over a year ago. The state-of-the-art facility offers the latest technology PET/CT diagnostic imaging and precise non-invasive radiation delivery systems along with minimally invasive robotic procedures.

According to Ann DeCarr, Florida Hospital DeLand Patient Care Navigator, the welcoming atmosphere at both the Cancer Institute and the Cancer Resource Center provide much needed comfort to patients overwhelmed with the news of a cancer diagnosis.

“When receiving the news that you have an illness, such as cancer, it can be devastating. Hearing statistics of survival rates may be comforting for some, but for most people, comfort is better felt in a warm gesture or supportive thoughts,” DeCarr said.

She and her dedicated team have all participated in training provided by the American Cancer Society.  Most of them have been touched by cancer as well. DeCarr believes cancer survivors themselves can provide current patients with a unique perspective.

“They get to see that there is life after cancer,” said DeCarr.  “That hope is just as important as all of the medical treatments we provide.”

The American Cancer Society estimates that 1,638,910 new cases of cancer will occur this year.  To assist the community with cancer prevention, Florida Hospital DeLand has created a free guide at www.hiddencancers.com.
