SGS Labs Accredited as Notified Bodies under the New EU Toy Directive

SGS is pleased to announce that its laboratories in France, UK, Germany and the Netherlands have been approved as Notified Bodies under the new EU Toy Directive 2009/48/EC.

July 31, 2012 - PRLog -- The new Toy Safety Directive (2009/48/EC) was published on June 30, 2009. The objective of the new Directive is to reduce toy related accidents by identifying hazards in toys not covered by the standards.

Recently, SGS laboratories in France, UK, Germany and Netherlands have been approved as Notified Bodies under the new EU Toy Directive. Notified bodies (NoBo) are organizations designated by the Member States on the basis of common evaluation criteria, and notified to the European Commission and the other Member States. With this specific status of Notified Body, SGS labs are allowed to conduct EC-type examinations and issue EC-type certifications for toys when applicable.

EC-Type Examination
The new EU Toy Safety Directive requires the toy manufacturer to perform an EC-type examination in the following cases:
1.   The toy is not covered by the existing harmonized EN 71 or EN 62115 standards.
2.   One specific part or element of the toy is not covered by a safety requirement of the existing harmonized EN 71 or EN 62115 standards.
3.   The toy fails one or several requirements of the harmonized EN 71 or EN 62115 standard, but the manufacturer considers that the toy complies with the essential safety requirements.
4.   The manufacturer has not applied the existing harmonized standards.
