Don't Fall Victim To Moving Company Scams

A recent epidemic has been sweeping the nation, and thousands of innocent people are being affected. Untrustworthy moving companies are holding people's personal belongings for ransom, but all of that is about to stop.

PRLog - Jul. 30, 2012 - There are moving companies out there that are in business for one simple reason. They are in business to scam people out of their hard earned money, not help them move from one place to the next. The scam falls under the old bait and switch routine.

Moving companies are offering extremely low prices on their services, but once the moving truck arrives, the price has tripled. The moving companies then hold all of the person's belongings hostage. Some of these moving companies are charging as much as $10,000 per day to hold all of the items.

This may change come October. President Obama has given the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration more power. Under this new power, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration will be able to step in and demand that a moving company return a person's goods. They will no longer be able to hold them hostage.

In 2011, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration received over 2500 complaints about moving companies. This is a huge increase of over 15% since the year 2010. Out of all the complaints, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration had to shut down 75 moving companies.

Moving companies are still taking advantage of people every day. Danita Thomas just recently had all of her belongings held hostage. She was originally quoted a price of  $1650.00 to move, but when the truck arrived, they said she had to pay $5900.00. The new rules will make it easier for the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration to prevent these types of problems from happening in the first place.

Consumers can also protect themselves by bypassing the moving company all together. Mark Jones, a spokesperson for http://www.truckrental.net, a moving truck rental shopping site has this to say.

“With all of the moving companies scamming people out of their money, we have seen a significant increase in moving truck rentals. People are starting to take things into their own hands, and that includes moving. Our service allows a person to shop and compare several different moving truck rental companies in one place. It might take a little bit more elbow grease to do a self move, but at least  the people that are taking advantage of self moves will not have to deal with increased moving prices.

Our service has helped over 2000 people locate the best rates on moving trucks in their area during the month of July. That is almost a 30% increase from July of 2011. Part of this massive growth can be contributed to people wanting to avoid the moving company scam.”

Consumers that are facing a move, might want to reconsider hiring a moving company. Renting a moving truck will give them the opportunity to avoid moving scams completely, and they will have the freedom to move according to their own schedule, not the moving companies.
