Gas Phase Polypropylene Process can Supply the Demand for Polyolefin

July 30, 2012 - PRLog -- In its newest report, Intratec Solutions LLC (http://www.intratec.us), a Houston publisher and chemical process consulting firm, presents a study of the capital investment and operating costs of the polypropylene production through the polymerization of propylene via a gas phase process in the US and China, based on a method similar to the Dow UNIPOL™ process.

Polypropylene Production via Gas Phase Process, Q3 2012 remembers that the demand for polyolefin has growth, due to the rapid economic development of numerous transition countries in the Asia Pacific region, Central Europe, the Middle East and South America, elevating the propylene and polypropylene prices.

Therefore, in the US, the upstream integration between Polypropylene and Propane Dehydrogenation Plants is more profitable than the standalone production of Polypropylene Plant, considering the easy access to feedstock and the raw material low cost.

The study points out that China presented the lowest CAPEX, being evaluated in approximately USD 220 million, and the most attractive return of investment. However, in terms of OPEX values, the USA is, at present, more cost-competitive than the other region: in a 400 kta plant located in the US Gulf Coast, the OPEX has a value lower than China, with an EBITDA margin of 21%.
