The Whole Scoop’s first ice cream shop is expected to open its doors in September in downtown Newhall. The business is a self-funded venture for local residents Scott Berry and Allison Edwards. What began as a hobby soon developed into making all natural ice cream in traditional flavors and even some new varieties.
The founders developed a full test kitchen in a garage, testing flavors on friends and family. It has taken three years of development and planning to achieve their dream of opening The Whole Scoop’s first brick and mortar location this Fall.
“Since this is a self-funded venture, we are using as many means as possible to get our store operating," Berry said. "We have spent most of our savings on equipment and product, and are looking to fund our venture in a variety of ways, one of those being community-supported grass-roots funding through Kickstarter."
The community now has the opportunity to give, whether large or small, to the Kickstarter campaign. Kickstarter is an online crowdfunding site that allows community members to pledge funds toward the entrepreneurs’
“The community’s support through our Kickstarter project will help us build our very quaint store that will be a great location for families, first dates and after event refreshments. We want people to come in, have a scoop and hang out,” said Berry. “We've sunk our savings into this concept for three years and feel that now is the right time to make it happen. With the economy the way it is we are pulling together every resource we have to raise the funds to open this store.” Starting from the ground up isn't easy and every small bit of help is very much appreciated, according to the owners.
