July 27, 2012 - PRLog -- Overall there is £50,000 worth of prizes up for grabs this year through the UK’s largest national music competition for singers and solo artists.

This year there will be a new main cash prize of £5,000, with a £2,500 prize for the runner-up and £1,000 for the remaining age-category winners.  Contestants also get the chance to win throughout every stage of the competition, including masterclasses and development courses with some of the UK’s best musicians courtesy of ICMP and extensive coverage and promotion on MUZU.TV.

Along with the cash prize, the winner of the Open Mic UK competition will get a personalised publicity package with coverage in national music publications including Q, The Fly, Rewind, Mojo and Flavour (publications depend on the winner). There’s also a UK tour of up to 100 shows and a comprehensive social media, image and brand consultation package, which will be tailored around the winner.

Events Director for Open Mic UK Chris Grayston says the new prize is great news for the winner: “It means the winner of Open Mic UK 2012 can spend the cash on wherever they think they need the development, whether that be on studio time or marketing or whatever. Hopefully along with the other prizes they’ll take it’ll make a real difference in getting them started in the music industry.”

Open Mic UK has a great pedigree for success with previous winners. Birdy’s debut album has been a massive hit across Europe achieving number one status as well as going gold in Holland and Belgium and hitting the Top 20 in the UK. Also her cover of Bon Iver’s ‘Skinny Love’ has topped charts across Europe, and on top of that she has recorded the song ‘Learn Me Right’ with Mumford & Sons.

Another winner Hatty Keane’s career has gone from strength to the strength since winning at Open Mic UK, signing with BGM soon after the competition, and going on to support the likes of Ed Sheeran, Wretch 32 and Pitbull.

Singers who make it through the audition stage will go on to perform in the live showcases at some of the UK’s best venues including the Birmingham NEC, Glasgow Royal Concert Hall and Portsmouth Guildhall, complete with an audience and judging panel as they aim to progress through the competition to the National Final at The O2 in London.

The competition judging panel is made up of music industry specialists, A&R, vocal coaches and guest celebrities. Gracing the judging panel in previous years has been Radio 1 DJ Annie Nightingale, Another Level star Dane Bowers and double Mobo-award winner Shola Ama, with more top judges set to be announced for the 2012 competition!
The Open Mic UK competition is divided into age categories; Under 16, 17-22, and 23 and over. All types of vocal performers, groups, acoustic singer/songwriters and singers are wanted across the UK to enter.

Audition slots are now available across the UK, so if you’re a singer and think you’ve got what it takes, get on the mic for Open Mic UK 2012!
