Calories on menus! What's your opinion?

Restaurant chains in Ireland require to Post calories on menu boards. At the end of 2011, the minister for health DR James Reilly introduces an initiative to implement calories on menu boards.

July 27, 2012 - PRLog -- The incentive behind the initiative is to provide the Irish with calorie counts in the hopes that they will make healthier choices, therefore reducing obesity and diabetes. According to the department of health at present 39% of adults are overweight and 18% are obese, but most worrying of all is that childhood obesity has reached epidemic proportions in Europe. The minister spoke at the launch and said “Voluntary for now, but if people don’t come to the party, I will legislate.”
The minister thinks this will help people consume smaller portions when eating out, along with making healthier food choices. But the restaurant association of Irelands view is that this should be tackled at a younger age. Healthy eating should be taught at primary and secondary levels. It could cost an individual restaurant as much as €5000 to implement the new calories on menu boards claimed the Restaurant Association of Ireland. This has shown a mixed reaction from the restaurant trade and has come at a time when restaurants are eager to save old jobs, create new jobs and cut costs. A study by the New York University said that five out of six customers paid no attention to the information. Studies have shown that calorie counting on menus hasn’t changed the minds of customers.
