Physician Practice Survival Conference names healthcare innovator and
TheHealthMaven host LeAnna J. Carey as co-chair

The Physician Practice Survival Conference has named healthcare innovator, writer, and Internet radio talk show host LeAnna J. Carey, MBA, as co-chair of its inaugural conference to be held September 14-15 in Alexandria, VA. The conference will examine the economic challenges that threaten the survival of independent physician practices, while exploring viable business models that can produce long-term economic stability for physicians who wish to remain independent.

Ms. Carey will address the pressing topic, “How to Effectively Position Your Practice to Current and Prospective Patients,” something few doctors worried about 15 years ago. “Gone are the days when doctors can hang a shingle and patients come flooding in,” she says. “Consumer expectations have changed, and with the new Affordable Care Act, the question is, what can doctors do to be ready? How are they going to market themselves—and how can they turn a profit in the new post-healthcare reform landscape?”

Ms. Carey will also moderate a number of panel discussions that will weigh the pros, the cons, and the sustainability of new economic models for independent physicians. “We really want to dig into the problems that are threatening doctors’ survival right now,” she says. “Long hours, reimbursement challenges, and the primary care shortage play a huge role in deterring young folks from entering the medical profession.”

Ms. Carey is healthcare editor of the website Innovation Excellence, co-founder of mobile healthcare company AuraViva, and host of the Internet radio talk show “TheHealthMaven” on BlogTalkRadio. She is a 30-year market development executive with expertise in strategy and innovation, executing go-to-market strategies, and managing outpatient centers into profitability. Ms. Carey has been responsible for driving unprecedented growth in both established and start-up healthcare companies. Previously, she was vice president of strategy and government relations for Healthways and a regional vice president for AirLogix.

The two-day Physician Practice Survival Conference speaker line-up includes some of the most respected leaders in healthcare, from practicing physicians to industry executives to third-party solution providers. Noteworthy physicians on the program include conference co-chair Kevin Fickenscher, M.D., President and CEO of the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA); Ron Sroka, M.D., who was featured last year in a New York Times article about independent physician survival; Russell Libby, M.D., F.A.A.P., president-elect of the Medical Society of Virginia; and Kerry Willis, M.D., chief physician strategist of ACO Subgroup Leadership at Proactive HealthCare USA.
