Legal-Island Reduce Food Waste in Biodiversity Audit

We carried out an environmental and a biodiversity audit in partnership with Business in the Community in 2011. It revealed a number of areas where Legal-Island could make savings in relation to waste reduction inside and outside the organisation.

July 26, 2012 - PRLog -- WHAT LEGAL-ISLAND DID

Legal-Island focused on the following areas:
* Waste management inside the office
* Waste management outside the office
* Increased staff awareness of their environmental responsibility
* Legal-Island implemented the following relatively small tactics; ones which are proving to make a big difference:

* All staff have been provided with recycling bins at their desks
* The kitchen hosts different bins for different products and all recycled waste is recorded
* All printing is double sided where possible and recycled paper is used in the photocopier
* By switching refuse collectors, waste is now segregated and recycled where possible
* Regular announcements and reminders are given to staff to keep them aware of and involved, in this important recycling process
* Legal-Island’s biggest achievement is fairly unique and highly innovative when it comes to reducing food waste.

The organisation has brought four Mexican chickens into the Legal-Island family. The chickens - Brittany, Henrietta, Biatta and Christina live in the company garden.

They are incredibly useful as all vegetarian food waste from the training centre and main office is used to feed them. This has greatly reduced the food waste which goes from the office to the bin and eventually to landfill. In return, the chickens produce beautiful eggs which Legal-Island gives to its visitors. All other food waste is put in the composter and the finished product is used for window baskets and hanging baskets in the summer.

ABOUT LEGAL-ISLAND

Legal-Island is a specialist in employment law and runs a programme of events in NI, ROI and GB. It aims for excellence and efficiency in all it does and aims to be responsible in acting as efficiently as possible when it comes to waste within the company.

IMPACT

* Staff are more aware of being responsible with waste
* By giving the food waste to the chickens they are kept healthy and eggs for visitors are a lovely bonus
* The quantity of waste going to landfill has been greatly reduced
* The food which degrades in the composter is reused for the window boxes and hanging baskets which also saves the company money
